Lenten Devotional, Feb 28

Now faithfulness is the concrete foundation (“sub-stance”) of things hoped for… (Hebrews 11:1)

There is a big construction project directly across from our apartment in Tübingen, Germany with currently three major features: an architect’s drawing (lower left) of the much-needed new apartment block, a couple of construction cranes, and a massive concrete foundation. Right now, the foundation is perhaps the most important component because it provides the “concrete” assurance that the building is coming. Likewise, our faithfulness to God—especially in times of uncertainty and waiting—is the present, concrete substance of the very real city that we long to live in, whose architect and builder is God (Hebrews 11:10).

Let us pray. Lord Jesus, pioneer and perfecter of faithfulness, help us to keep our eyes fixed upon you so that we too may live faithfully to God, and, in so living, that we may rejoice today in the precious things to come. Amen.
